People are not check boxes

So, Don Miller wrote a thing about gender difference and gender equality. Like previous things he’s written about gender, it’s pretty wrongheaded.

Whither Christian women bloggers?

I’ve been chuckling over the recent (and I guess ongoing) dustup over the “Top 200 Church Blogs” list by Kent Shaffer of Church Relevance. Per Dianna Anderson, the list is 93% white men and has zero women of color. Which just raises the question…which churches is Shaffer talking about?

Red Riding Hood's mother warned her about the patriarchy.

Jared Wilson and the politics of forgiveness

To be honest, responses like this are part of why I can’t trust liberal evangelicalism or Christian egalitarianism as a culture. There’s still a lot of reluctance even from evangelicals who oppose abusive and exclusionary theology to clearly and fully name it for what it is.

Todd Akin, Jared Wilson, and apologies that aren’t

Todd Akin, Jared Wilson, and apologies that aren’t

Trigger warning: sexual violence, rape apologism, victim blaming, cissexism, anti-choice rhetoric. Content note: Not all people with uteruses are women and not all women have uteruses. Not all rape survivors are women, or adults. I use language that reflects this where I’m not paraphrasing/unpacking the views of people who choose to believe the [...]

Jared Wilson: Rape is God’s “passive judgment” on sinful cultures

I asked Jared Wilson to clarify whether he agrees with Doug Wilson’s view of rape as a judgement of cultures that don’t “cherish” (exercise authority over) women. This was the ensuing conversation. I wanted to allow Jared to explain his views in his own terms. I think his words speak for themselves.

Kansas apologizes for Fred Phelps [Wikimedia Commons]

[AWH Classic] Good people do terrible things

I have a few more comments on the Doug/Jared Wilson fiasco. Perhaps needless to say, I don’t agree with the general consensus that the situation is temporarily resolved because Jared Wilson “apologized.” For one thing, in my opinion he did no such thing, and for another, an apology wasn’t really [...]

Doug Wilson, The Gospel Coalition, and Sanctified Rape Culture

Doug Wilson, The Gospel Coalition, and Sanctified Rape Culture

Major trigger warning: extreme rape and rape culture apologism, victim blaming, slavery and Confederacy apologism. Note: this is a long post. If you only have time to read part of it, I’d recommend starting here. The following is a quote by Douglas (Doug) Wilson, a complementarian pastor, from his book [...]

Like a fundamentalist Dalek, Mark Driscoll is here to exterminate all your Christmas cheer. (Image by xneurospasta, CC license).

That time of year again: Mark Driscoll’s “Daddy Christmas Tips”

I see that Mark Driscoll has recycled his “Daddy Christmas Tips” for 2011. Since all the “tips” are identical to last year’s, it seemed right to re-post my comments on them. Enjoy! Christmas is around the corner, which for Mark Driscoll, apparently means yet another opportunity to bully men into [...]

The double standard at work: Anthony Bradley on Mark Driscoll and Rachel Held Evans

WORLD Magazine’s Anthony Bradley, slamming the campaign by Rachel Held Evans (RHE) against Driscoll’s bullying, perfectly exemplifies these tendencies to enable hateful behavior and attack anyone who dares to challenge it: One sign of the declining state of Christianity in America is the way in which believers publicly slander one [...]
